A few months back we began to implement a new routine for the children in our village communities surrounding self-care. We began teaching them how to brush their hair (many who had never seen a hairbrush), wash their face, hands, arms and teeth. We taught the mamas how to remove lice and the importance of every day self-care and hygiene. What began as a simple routine has turned into a change in atmosphere.
When we began, their little dirt stained arms would take what felt like hours to remove, still with dirt left over, but today, when they arrive, they are clean. What changed? We have watched as these simple introductions to everyday hygiene has given them confidence and has begun to change the way they view themselves, those around them, and their community.
They stand taller, talk louder, look us in the eyes and are beginning to dream. Their countenance is changing.
They arrive with their hair done, hands washed, come dressed in their best. Not because it is required but because they are learning that they are worth it. They are learning that they are just as important as the person down the street. That their dreams and desires hold just as much weight to their "Papa" as the person who "has it all". They are learning about the treasure that they are, and the treasure that their friend or family member is.
This simple change, this simple to us routine, has reduced the amount of fighting among our communities and we are watching as hope is rising, increase in joy is coming, and as our community once silent is filled with laughter and giggles. This simple change is another way we are seeing our communities transformed.
