“What does MARKED do?”
is a question we often get asked, and rightfully so! The programs we run, the institutions we support, and how we serve our communities changes from season to season. Our mission has remained the same but how it looks in different villages, with different families and different circumstances is of course not the same either. This is because we do not believe there is a one-size-fits-all solution for the members in the communities we serve so we must come to the table with open minds and listening ears.
“¿Qué hace MARKED?”
Es una pregunta que nos hacen a menudo, ¡y con razón! Los programas que ejecutamos, las instituciones que apoyamos y la forma en que servimos a nuestras comunidades cambian de una temporada a otra. Nuestra misión sigue siendo la misma, pero cómo se ve en diferentes pueblos, con diferentes familias y diferentes circunstancias, por supuesto, tampoco es la misma. Esto se debe a que no creemos que exista una solución única para los miembros de las comunidades a las que servimos, por lo que debemos sentarnos a la mesa con la mente abierta y oídos atentos.
Currently we run our community center, MARKED kindergarten, local school partnerships, and sports programs on a daily basis. We also have weekly educational classes like the Mommy & Me group, after-school tutoring sessions and also, a reading and writing club to help children who have never attended school or do not currently have the ability to, sometimes due to work, lack of parental support, or experience learning difficulties.
Actualmente administramos nuestro centro comunitario, el preescolar MARKED, alianzas con escuelas locales y programas deportivos a diario. También contamos con clases educativas semanales como el grupo de educación inicial, sesiones de tutorías extraescolares y también, un club de lectoescritura para ayudar a niños que nunca han asistido a la escuela o que actualmente no tienen la capacidad de hacerlo, en ocasiones por motivos de trabajo, falta de apoyo de sus padres o experimentar dificultades de aprendizaje.
As mentioned before, our approach to starting new projects is always to first identify the need and from there, it is to help our communities to dream, to think of the hopes and desires they have to together, solidify those goals to begin working towards them. In conversations with some of our teen boys who play on the soccer team, we realized they did not know how to read or write. This is why we began to evaluate the need for a space to help children learn to be literate. After exploring the idea, gaging interest, and hearing of additional cases of children unable to read, we decided to open a class.
Como se mencionó anteriormente, nuestro enfoque para iniciar nuevos proyectos es siempre identificar primero la necesidad y, a partir de ahí, ayudar a nuestras comunidades a soñar, a pensar en las esperanzas y deseos que tienen para juntos, solidificar esas metas para comenzar a trabajar hacia ellas. . En conversaciones con algunos de nuestros adolescentes que juegan en el equipo de fútbol, nos dimos cuenta de que no sabían leer ni escribir. Es por esto que comenzamos a evaluar la necesidad de un espacio para ayudar a los niños a aprender a alfabetizarse. Después de explorar la idea, medir el interés y escuchar casos adicionales de niños que no sabían leer, decidimos abrir una clase.
Of course, we shared the news with the soccer boys, as the idea began from conversations with them. Our community center director sat down with them to share the news of the class and to personally invite them to attend. Initially, the boys looked confused. It was as if they did not know how to react. They got nervous and seemed overwhelmed by the idea of attending the class.
Por supuesto, compartimos la noticia con los chicos del fútbol, ya que la idea surgió de conversaciones con ellos. Nuestro director del centro comunitario se sentó con ellos para compartir las novedades de la clase e invitarlos personalmente a asistir. Al principio, los chicos parecían confundidos. Era como si no supieran cómo reaccionar. Se pusieron nerviosos y parecían abrumados por la idea de asistir a la clase.
At that moment, the director asked them, “You all have friends, right?” then, “Would you consider me a friend?” to which they quickly answered yes, smiling. So he continued to explain that a good friend cares for the well-being and also the growth of his or her friends. He shared with them that he, the director, wants to see them continue to grow and succeed not just as athletes in soccer practices and games but also in every other area of their lives. Learning to read and write has become a vital skill for daily life, he shared. So, together, sitting in the classroom chatting, the three boys and the director made a deal.
En ese momento, el director les preguntó: “Todos ustedes tienen amigos, ¿verdad?”. luego: “¿Me considerarías un amigo?” a lo que rápidamente respondieron que sí, sonriendo. Por eso continuó explicando que un buen amigo se preocupa por el bienestar y también por el crecimiento de sus amigos. Les compartió que él, el director, quiere verlos seguir creciendo y teniendo éxito no solo como atletas en las prácticas y juegos de fútbol, sino también en todas las demás áreas de sus vidas. Aprender a leer y escribir se ha convertido en una habilidad vital para la vida diaria, compartió. Entonces, juntos, sentados en el aula charlando, los tres chicos y el director hicieron un trato.
The director ensured he would continue coaching and bringing in our special Coach Luis for soccer training as well as working to find games and tournaments across the area for the team to continue playing and getting opportunities to improve. All the boys have to do is show up for soccer, and also for the weekly reading and writing class so that together, we can continue to grow.
El director se aseguró de continuar entrenando y trayendo a nuestro entrenador especial Luis para el entrenamiento de fútbol, además de trabajar para encontrar juegos y torneos en toda el área para que el equipo continúe jugando y obteniendo oportunidades para mejorar. Lo único que los chicos tienen que hacer es presentarse al fútbol y también a la clase semanal de lectura y escritura para que juntos podamos seguir creciendo.
The four shook on it and now, a month later, we can testify to the growth we have seen. Those boys, along with the rest of the team and the other children attending the reading and writing class unsurely placed their trust in us but now, exude new-found confidence. We have seen them scoring goals, learning letters, sounding out syllables, encouraging one another and enjoying not just results but valuing the process too.
Los cuatro cerraron la conversación con un apretón de la mano y ahora, un mes después, podemos dar testimonio del crecimiento que hemos visto. Esos niños, junto con el resto del equipo y los demás niños que asistían a la clase de lectura y escritura, sin duda depositaron su confianza en nosotros, pero ahora exudan una confianza recién adquirida. Los hemos visto marcar goles, aprender letras, pronunciar sílabas, animarse unos a otros y disfrutar no sólo de los resultados sino también valorando el proceso.
Many times it seems little stories like this do a better job of explaining what we do and how we do it than a program description ever could. We are in no rush. We do not arrive with goals or a pre-made plan. We show up, we listen, and we come alongside.
Muchas veces parece que pequeñas historias como ésta explican mejor lo que hacemos y cómo lo hacemos que la descripción de un programa. No tenemos prisa. No llegamos con metas ni con un plan preestablecido. Nos presentamos, escuchamos y nos acompañamos.
Our mission is to be love, to empower our communities, to give them the tools to sustain healthy cycles so that they ultimately see positive transformation that continues spreading across the Ribera Chapala and beyond for generations to come.
