What a week! | ¡Qué semana!

This past week was a busy one and at the same time, such a beautiful one. There were so many special moments. So, here is a look at a few of them!

La semana pasada fue muy ocupada y, al mismo tiempo, muy hermosa. Hubo tantos momentos especiales. Así que aquí, ¡te compartimos un pequeño vistazo a algunos de ellos!

Yes, we have shared a bit about soccer recently but our programs and teams are thriving! This week, we saw yet again how being a part of the sports community is opening doors to minister more personally to neighboring towns and families. Our team won again this week but the true victory was seeing our boys congratulate the other team and invite them to come have lunch at Casa MARKED. Afterwards, the two teams and coaches enjoyed a meal together, laughing, and reliving the excitement of the game together. Our boys have learned quickly; it´s not about winning or losing. It´s about being the best version of yourself that you can be, on and off the field!

Sí, hemos compartido un poco sobre fútbol recientemente, ¡pero nuestros programas y equipos están prosperando! Esta semana, vimos una vez más cómo ser parte de la comunidad deportiva abre puertas para ministrar de manera más personal a los pueblos y familias vecinas. Nuestro equipo volvió a ganar esta semana pero la verdadera victoria fue ver a nuestros muchachos felicitar al otro equipo e invitarlos a comer en Casa MARKED. Los dos equipos y entrenadores disfrutaron juntos de una comida, riendo y reviviendo juntos la emoción del partido. Nuestros muchachos ya han aprendido que no se trata de ganar o perder. ¡Se trata de ser la mejor versión de ti mismo que puedas ser, dentro y fuera de la cancha!

“The Lord knew” were words spoken multiple times this week. We had old and new friends of MARKED in town from the states this week and with them they brought truth and encouragement to our staff and other members of our community. For example, we had a scheduled meeting with some parents regarding school and future plans yet after addressing those details, it turned into a conversation about forgiveness. The focus shifted because this bigger need was revealed. So, a brief meeting became over an hour of learning how to release offenses, the power of true forgiveness and then praying together for the future of local schools and families.

“El Señor sabía” fueron palabras pronunciadas varias veces esta semana. Esta semana tuvimos viejos y nuevos amigos de MARKED en la ciudad desde Estados Unidos y con ellos trajeron verdad y aliento a nuestro personal y a otros miembros de nuestra comunidad. Por ejemplo, teníamos una reunión programada con algunos padres sobre la escuela y los planes futuros, pero después de abordar esos detalles, se convirtió en una conversación sobre el perdón. El enfoque cambió y una breve reunión se convirtió en más de una hora para aprender cómo liberar las ofensas, el poder del verdadero perdón y orar juntos por el futuro de las escuelas y familias locales.

Of course when we have friends in town, we do all we can to maximize time! Days are spent in the villages and evenings are spent catching up with friends and partners of MARKED in Guadalajara. We were fortunate enough to be able to sit down and have a meal with the local and global leadership of one of our partner churches, Bread of Life. Then, later in the week, our staff was also able to attend the dedication service of this church. People from all over the world were in attendance, of course some from Mexico, Guatemala, United States, and even others from Taiwan. As many nations, various families, and different ministries and organizations working in the Guadalajara area and beyond, we came together to worship, and to pray for our city and its people whom we love so dearly. It was a powerful time and we are thankful to have the opportunity to build community with local churches!

Por supuesto, cuando tenemos amigos en la ciudad, ¡hacemos todo lo posible para maximizar el tiempo! Los días se pasan en los pueblos y las noches se ponen al día con amigos y socios de MARKED en Guadalajara. Tuvimos la suerte de poder sentarnos y comer con el liderazgo local y global de una de nuestras iglesias asociadas, Pan de Vida. Luego, más adelante en la semana, nuestro personal también pudo asistir al servicio de dedicación de esta iglesia. Asistieron personas de todo el mundo, por supuesto algunos de México, Guatemala, Estados Unidos e incluso otros de Taiwán. Como muchas naciones, varias familias y diferentes ministerios y organizaciones que trabajan en el área de Guadalajara y más allá, nos reunimos para adorar y orar por nuestra ciudad y su gente a quienes amamos tanto. ¡Fue un momento poderoso y estamos agradecidos de tener la oportunidad de construir una comunidad con las iglesias locales!

This week we also got to celebrate the lives of two girls and the legacy of wholeness and faithfulness being shared with the next generation in Mexico. We celebrated Morgan and Chava´s daughter turning one and also, had the honor of accompanying Paty, Sam and their daughter as she shopped for her quinceañera dress. There were many happy tears and prolonged hugs as we celebrated these two beautiful girls, their families, as well as the perfect timing and plans of God.

What a week!

Esta semana también pudimos celebrar la vida de dos niñas y el legado de plenitud y fidelidad que está siendo compartida con la próxima generación aquí en México. Celebramos el primer cumpleaños de la hija de Morgan y Chava y también tuvimos el honor de acompañar a Paty, Sam y su hija mientras compraba su vestido de quinceañera. Hubo muchas lágrimas de felicidad y abrazos prolongados mientras celebramos a estas dos hermosas niñas, sus vidas, sus familias, así como los tiempos y planes perfectos de Dios.

12 years | 12 años

Today marks our 12th anniversary! What an incredible 12 years it has been.

¡Hoy se cumple nuestro 12º aniversario! Qué increíbles 12 años han sido.

When MARKED was first established, we were partnering with just one other institution- a children´s home and were reaching a humble 80 children through our support network. At that time, with those now seemingly small numbers, was a beautiful beginning to a movement that has grown significantly.

Cuando se estableció MARKED por primera vez, nos asociábamos solo con otra institución: un hogar para niños y estábamos llegando a unos humildes 80 niños a través de nuestra red de apoyo. En ese momento, con esos números ahora aparentemente pequeños, fue un hermoso comienzo para un movimiento que ha crecido significativamente.

Now, we directly serve over 300 children each day. We offer nutritious meals at our local public partner schools and from our very own community center, Casa MARKED. We also support community sports programs and coach our own soccer teams too. We offer weekly educational programs like our literacy club and afterschool tutoring class.

Ahora atendemos directamente a más de 300 niños cada día. Ofrecemos comidas nutritivas en las escuelas públicas locales aliadas con MARKED y en nuestro propio centro comunitario, Casa MARKED. También apoyamos programas deportivos comunitarios e incluso, entrenamos a nuestros propios equipos de fútbol. Ofrecemos programas educativos semanales como nuestro club de lectoescritura y clases de regularización por la tarde.

Street outreach in Agua Caliente | Ministrando en las calles de Agua Caliente

Over the years, we have partnered with dozens of local schools, churches, children´s homes and even had the privilege to partner with local government all with the goal of seeing negative generational cycles broken and families restored! This year though, was a breakthrough year in so many ways- starting our own school, being invited to serve in a neighboring village, and seeing the fruits of the seeds that have been sown over the years.

A lo largo de los años, nos hemos asociado con docenas de escuelas locales, iglesias, hogares para niños e incluso hemos tenido el privilegio de trabajar junto con el gobierno local, ¡todo con el objetivo de romper los ciclos generacionales negativos y restaurar las familias! Sin embargo, este año fue un gran avance en muchos sentidos: comenzar nuestra propia escuela, ser invitados a servir en un pueblo vecino y ver los frutos de las semillas que se han sembrado a lo largo de los años.

We are just so thankful. It is a privilege and an honor to serve these communities. Each day we are so grateful to have the opportunity to teach, train, equip and empower at-risk families. The victories, the salvations, the advances, and the growth of this year isn´t just ours to celebrate, it´s all yours too. Thanks to you and every other person who has joined the MARKED movement, lives are being transformed, roots mended and families made whole.

Estamos muy agradecidos. Es un privilegio y un honor servir a estas comunidades. Cada día estamos muy agradecidos de tener la oportunidad de enseñar, capacitar, equipar y empoderar a familias en riesgo. Las victorias, las salvaciones, los avances y el crecimiento de este año no son solo nuestros para celebrar, son todos tuyos también. Gracias a usted y a todas las personas que se han unido al movimiento MARKED, se están transformando vidas, se están reparando raíces y se están recuperando familias.

There´s so much to celebrate and yet we so firmly believe, the best is yet to come!

Hay mucho que celebrar y, sin embargo, creemos firmemente que ¡lo mejor está por venir!

Goal after goal | Gol tras gol

Just like we have over the past few years, we were again invited by a local school to help coach children and get them ready to compete at a regional athletics competition. As usual, schools from across the county came to participate, and many with advantages that our team did not like more access to resources in their schools, experience with competitive sports and even more time preparing. Yet, to everyone´s surprise, our kids, the 24 kids from San Pedro came out victorious! Out of all of the groups and schools who participated, it was our team that won the most events!

Al igual que en los últimos años, una escuela local nos invitó nuevamente a ayudar a entrenar a los niños y prepararlos para participar en una competencia de atletismo regional. Como siempre, asistieron escuelas de todo el municipio, y muchas de ellas con ventajas que nuestro equipo no compartía: mayor acceso a recursos en sus escuelas, experiencia con deportes competitivos e incluso más tiempo de preparación. Sin embargo, de sorpresa para muchos, ¡nuestros niños, los 24 niños de San Pedro, salieron victoriosos! De todos los grupos y escuelas que participaron, ¡fue nuestro equipo el que ganó la mayor cantidad de eventos!

Track & Field Competition | Competencia de atletismo

Each child won at least one medal and many went home carrying two or three. It was incredible to see the childrens´ faces. They arrived nervous and unsure of themselves but left jumping and smiling, proudly holding up their medals to show their friends. That´s when we knew our goal had been met. It wasn´t about winning. We. as well as their P.E. teacher Mr.Jorge have believed in them from the start but it was evident that now, these kids believe in themselves. That is our goal: to empower.

Cada niño ganó al menos una medalla y muchos regresaron a casa con dos o tres. Fue increíble ver las caras de los niños. Llegaron nerviosos e inseguros de sí mismos pero se fueron saltando y sonriendo, sosteniendo con orgullo sus medallas para mostrárselas a sus amigos. Fue entonces cuando supimos que nuestro objetivo se había cumplido. No se trataba de ganar. Nosotros. así como su profe de educación física, Jorge creyó en ellos desde el principio, pero era evidente que ahora estos niños creen en sí mismos. Ese es nuestro objetivo: empoderar.

COMMUNITY THROUGH SOCCER | COMMUNIDAD A TRAVÉS DEL FUTBÓL

Later in the week, our director organized for some soccer-loving boys in a neighboring village that we have gotten to know well through outreach in the streets to come to San Pedro to play a game! While the boys were thrilled at the idea of playing in a real game, they were also nervous to come to another village due to dynamics related to gang violence and conflict between the areas.

Luego en la semana, nuestro director organizó para que algunos niños amantes del fútbol en un pueblo vecino que hemos llegado a conocer bien a través de repartir comida y pasar tiempo en las calles, vinieran a San Pedro a jugar un partido. Claro que los niños estaban entusiasmados con la idea de jugar un juego real, pero también estaban nerviosos de venir a otra zona debido a la dinámica relacionada con temas de pandillerismo y violencia entre las zonas.

We were not sure they would be, but on the day of the game, all the boys were outside, all ready and excitedly waiting for us to pick them up! Before taking them to the soccer field, we made a quick stop at Casa MARKED, a brave and wise decision by our community center director. Why? So the boys could meet the children in MARKED, the ones who come for daily programs and play on our soccer teams. The boys shaking hands and introducing themselves was much more than an icebreaker. It was groups setting aside their differences and preconceived ideas, truly getting to know one another. It was young men extending the same kindness, respect, and community that they have experienced in MARKED, to others.

No estábamos seguros de que lo estuvieran, pero el día del juego, todos los niños estaban afuera, ¡todos listos y esperando emocionados a que los recogiéramos! Antes de llevarlos a la cancha de fútbol, ​​hicimos una rápida parada en Casa MARKED, una decisión valiente y sabia de nuestro director del centro comunitario. ¿Por qué? Para que los chicos pudieran conocer a los niños de MARKED, los que vienen a los programas diarios y juegan en nuestros equipos de fútbol. Que los chicos se dieran la mano y se presentaran fue mucho más que una forma de romper el hielo. Fueron grupos que dejaron de lado sus diferencias e ideas preconcebidas y se conocieron verdaderamente unos a otros. Fueron jóvenes que extendieron a otros la misma amabilidad, respeto y comunidad que habían experimentado en MARKED.

Soon, it was time for the game so we headed to the soccer fields . The whistle was blown and they started to play. Both sides played hard but clean and with respect, which was a shock to those watching. A well-respected member of the community was passing by at the time. He stopped to watch the boys play for a bit then, he came up to us and said, “Thank you for bringing together these communities”.

Another goal met.

Pronto llegó la hora del partido, así que nos dirigimos a los campos de fútbol. Sonó el silbato y empezaron a jugar. Ambos equipos jugaron duro pero limpio y con respeto, lo que fue un shock para quienes miraban. En ese momento pasaba por allí un miembro muy respetado de la comunidad. Se detuvo un rato para ver jugar a los niños, luego se acercó a nosotros y nos dijo: “Gracias por unir a estas comunidades”.

Otro objetivo cumplido.

Everywhere we go, across villages and various programs, our goals are to be love, to build community, and to empower families. It´s about showing others that things do not have to simple stay the way they are because that is how they have always been. Together, if we believe how things could be and take the necessary actions families can live the way they should be- thriving.

Dondequiera que vayamos, en los pueblos diferences y diversos programas, nuestros objetivos siempre son: ser amor, construir comunidad y empoderar a las familias. Se trata de mostrar a los demás que las cosas no tienen que quedarse iguales simplemente porque así han sido siempre. Juntos, si creemos en cómo podrían ser las cosas y tomamos las medidas necesarias, las familias pueden vivir como deberían: en prosperidad.
