La Peña Kinder

“Dale, dale dale!” the children sang out as each one took a turn at breaking open the piñata. Being gathered together, with the students of our partner school, the public kindergarten in La Peña, was the best start to the MARKED 2023 Christmas celebrations this past Friday, The laughter echoed throughout the school and the joy was absolutely infectious.

“¡Dale, dale, dale!” Los niños cantaron mientras cada uno se turnaba para romper la piñata. Estar reunidos con los estudiantes de nuestra escuela aliada, el kinder público en La Peña, fue el mejor comienzo para las celebraciones navideñas de MARKED 2023 el viernes pasado. Las risas resonaron en toda la escuela y la alegría fue absolutamente contagiosa.

Thanks to your help, MARKED was able to provide a piñata, lots of candy, gifts, and delicious food for all of the 100 children who attend the school. We came alongside of the teachers and parents to plan a special party for these kids and everyone chipped in what they could-some gave their time by helping decorate the school and serving food while others even helped prepare the food and brought other activities like nail polish and games for the kids to enjoy as well.

Gracias a su ayuda, MARKED pudo proporcionar una piñata, muchos dulces, regalos y comida deliciosa para los 100 niños que asisten a la escuela. Nos unimos a los maestros y padres para planificar una fiesta especial para estos niños y todos contribuyeron con lo que pudieron; algunos dieron su tiempo ayudando a decorar la escuela y sirviendo comida, mientras que otros ayudaron a preparar la comida y trajeron otras actividades como esmalte de uñas. y juegos para los niños también.

That´s how we like to do things—together. Each event, each program, and each partnership with local schools and organizations is made better when everyone has a part to play. When we work together, we learn, others can be empowered, and we can bring the very best to those we serve- from the community, for the community.

Así es como nos gusta hacer las cosas: juntos. Cada evento, cada programa y cada alianza con escuelas y organizaciones locales mejora cuando todos tienen un papel para tomar en ello. Cuando trabajamos juntos, aprendemos, otros pueden ser empoderados y podemos brindar lo mejor a aquellos a quienes servimos: de la comunidad y para la comunidad.

We cannot thank you enough for being part of MARKED and helping us bring the excitement of Christmas to our partner schools! The celebrations are just getting started but already, so many lives have been positively impacted!

¡No podemos agradecerles lo suficiente por ser parte de MARKED y ayudarnos a llevar la emoción de la Navidad a nuestras escuelas aliadas! Las celebraciones apenas comienzan, pero ¡muchas vidas han sido impactadas positivamente!

What a week! | ¡Qué semana!

This past week was a busy one and at the same time, such a beautiful one. There were so many special moments. So, here is a look at a few of them!

La semana pasada fue muy ocupada y, al mismo tiempo, muy hermosa. Hubo tantos momentos especiales. Así que aquí, ¡te compartimos un pequeño vistazo a algunos de ellos!

Yes, we have shared a bit about soccer recently but our programs and teams are thriving! This week, we saw yet again how being a part of the sports community is opening doors to minister more personally to neighboring towns and families. Our team won again this week but the true victory was seeing our boys congratulate the other team and invite them to come have lunch at Casa MARKED. Afterwards, the two teams and coaches enjoyed a meal together, laughing, and reliving the excitement of the game together. Our boys have learned quickly; it´s not about winning or losing. It´s about being the best version of yourself that you can be, on and off the field!

Sí, hemos compartido un poco sobre fútbol recientemente, ¡pero nuestros programas y equipos están prosperando! Esta semana, vimos una vez más cómo ser parte de la comunidad deportiva abre puertas para ministrar de manera más personal a los pueblos y familias vecinas. Nuestro equipo volvió a ganar esta semana pero la verdadera victoria fue ver a nuestros muchachos felicitar al otro equipo e invitarlos a comer en Casa MARKED. Los dos equipos y entrenadores disfrutaron juntos de una comida, riendo y reviviendo juntos la emoción del partido. Nuestros muchachos ya han aprendido que no se trata de ganar o perder. ¡Se trata de ser la mejor versión de ti mismo que puedas ser, dentro y fuera de la cancha!

“The Lord knew” were words spoken multiple times this week. We had old and new friends of MARKED in town from the states this week and with them they brought truth and encouragement to our staff and other members of our community. For example, we had a scheduled meeting with some parents regarding school and future plans yet after addressing those details, it turned into a conversation about forgiveness. The focus shifted because this bigger need was revealed. So, a brief meeting became over an hour of learning how to release offenses, the power of true forgiveness and then praying together for the future of local schools and families.

“El Señor sabía” fueron palabras pronunciadas varias veces esta semana. Esta semana tuvimos viejos y nuevos amigos de MARKED en la ciudad desde Estados Unidos y con ellos trajeron verdad y aliento a nuestro personal y a otros miembros de nuestra comunidad. Por ejemplo, teníamos una reunión programada con algunos padres sobre la escuela y los planes futuros, pero después de abordar esos detalles, se convirtió en una conversación sobre el perdón. El enfoque cambió y una breve reunión se convirtió en más de una hora para aprender cómo liberar las ofensas, el poder del verdadero perdón y orar juntos por el futuro de las escuelas y familias locales.

Of course when we have friends in town, we do all we can to maximize time! Days are spent in the villages and evenings are spent catching up with friends and partners of MARKED in Guadalajara. We were fortunate enough to be able to sit down and have a meal with the local and global leadership of one of our partner churches, Bread of Life. Then, later in the week, our staff was also able to attend the dedication service of this church. People from all over the world were in attendance, of course some from Mexico, Guatemala, United States, and even others from Taiwan. As many nations, various families, and different ministries and organizations working in the Guadalajara area and beyond, we came together to worship, and to pray for our city and its people whom we love so dearly. It was a powerful time and we are thankful to have the opportunity to build community with local churches!

Por supuesto, cuando tenemos amigos en la ciudad, ¡hacemos todo lo posible para maximizar el tiempo! Los días se pasan en los pueblos y las noches se ponen al día con amigos y socios de MARKED en Guadalajara. Tuvimos la suerte de poder sentarnos y comer con el liderazgo local y global de una de nuestras iglesias asociadas, Pan de Vida. Luego, más adelante en la semana, nuestro personal también pudo asistir al servicio de dedicación de esta iglesia. Asistieron personas de todo el mundo, por supuesto algunos de México, Guatemala, Estados Unidos e incluso otros de Taiwán. Como muchas naciones, varias familias y diferentes ministerios y organizaciones que trabajan en el área de Guadalajara y más allá, nos reunimos para adorar y orar por nuestra ciudad y su gente a quienes amamos tanto. ¡Fue un momento poderoso y estamos agradecidos de tener la oportunidad de construir una comunidad con las iglesias locales!

This week we also got to celebrate the lives of two girls and the legacy of wholeness and faithfulness being shared with the next generation in Mexico. We celebrated Morgan and Chava´s daughter turning one and also, had the honor of accompanying Paty, Sam and their daughter as she shopped for her quinceañera dress. There were many happy tears and prolonged hugs as we celebrated these two beautiful girls, their families, as well as the perfect timing and plans of God.

What a week!

Esta semana también pudimos celebrar la vida de dos niñas y el legado de plenitud y fidelidad que está siendo compartida con la próxima generación aquí en México. Celebramos el primer cumpleaños de la hija de Morgan y Chava y también tuvimos el honor de acompañar a Paty, Sam y su hija mientras compraba su vestido de quinceañera. Hubo muchas lágrimas de felicidad y abrazos prolongados mientras celebramos a estas dos hermosas niñas, sus vidas, sus familias, así como los tiempos y planes perfectos de Dios.

A neighbor saved | Un vecino salvado

Just down the street from Casa MARKED is the family home of one of our staff members. There, live her parents, siblings and their children. While many of the kids often come to Casa MARKED and participate in our programs, the adults are often not as available to come by due to work. 

A unos pasos de Casa MARKED está la casa de la familia de uno de los miembros de nuestro personal. Allí viven sus padres, hermanos y los hijos. Muchos de los niños suelen venir a Casa MARKED y participar en nuestros programas, pero los adultos muchas veces no están disponibles para venir debido al trabajo.

So, it is truly remarkable to us how MARKED, our culture and beliefs had reached even the father. About a month ago, we received news that the father had fallen ill. Despite the efforts made to manage the sickness, an infection had spread across his body and he was in very serious condition. 

Así que nos sorprende como MARKED, nuestra cultura y creencias habían llegado hasta al padre. Hace aproximadamente un mes recibimos la noticia de que el padre había enfermado. A pesar de los esfuerzos realizados para controlar la enfermedad, una infección se había extendido por su cuerpo y él se encontraba en un estado muy grave.

As the family waited for transportation to the hospital to arrive, we were invited to pray for the father. It was in that intimate moment that he decided to give his life to the Lord. A time of genuine  worry and concern about his health quickly shifted to a joyful time, gratefully celebrating his decision. 

Mientras la familia esperaba que llegara el transporte al hospital, fuimos invitados a pasar y orar por el padre. Fue en ese momento íntimo que él decidió entregar su vida al Señor. Un momento de angustia y preocupación por su salud rápidamente se convirtió en un momento de alegría, celebrando con gratitud su decisión.

Just this week, we were able to chat with him a bit more. After multiple appointments and treatments, he is back on his feet, fully healed and has returned to work already! 

Esta misma semana pudimos conversar un poco más con él y después de múltiples citas y tratamientos, ¡está de nuevo en pie, completamente curado y ya ha regresado a trabajar!

We are filled with such joy knowing another soul has been won over, and also, how this salvation has positively impacted the whole family. Hearts have been softened, forgiveness granted, and relationships restored in this family thanks to this father’s bold decision. It is a new beginning for them! 

Nos llena de alegría saber que otra alma ha sido ganada y también cómo esta salvación ha impactado positivamente a toda la familia. Los corazones duros se han suavizado, se ha concedido el perdón y se han restablecido las relaciones en esta familia gracias a la decisión de este padre. ¡Es un nuevo comienzo para ellos!

How exciting it is for us to be reminded that members in our communities that do not or cannot come through our doors, are also being reached! Our neighbors are watching, seeing and hearing what MARKED is doing and how our culture is different from the one outside, and they want in.

¡Qué emocionante es para nosotros recordar que los miembros de nuestras comunidades que no entran o no pueden cruzar nuestras puertas también están siendo alcanzados! Nuestros vecinos están observando, viendo y escuchando lo que MARKED está haciendo y cómo nuestra cultura es diferente a la de afuera, y quieren ser parte.

Partner School Graudations! | Las graduaciones de nuestras escuelas aliadas

These last few days of July have been spent attending and participating in various graduation ceremonies in the villages where we serve, including our two partner schools! We had the pleasure of handing out each diploma and shaking the hand of every kindergartner at La Peña kindergarten as well as each 6th grader graduating from elementary school in Chalpicote.

¡Estos últimos días de julio los he pasado asistiendo y participando en varias ceremonias de graduación en los pueblos donde servimos, incluidas nuestras dos escuelas aliadas! Tuvimos el placer de entregar cada diploma y dar la mano a cada niño de kínder del jardín de niños La Peña, así como de cada uno de los estudiantes de sexto grado que se graduaron de la escuela primaria en Chalpicote.

To see the children's eyes light up and smile big as their families clapped and whistled loud was beyond special for us. Just a few years ago when we started partnering with schools, classrooms were nearly empty and events were few and far between. Flash forward eight years later, to now,  and we are seeing classrooms full of children and enrollment for next year through the roof! Kids are interested in going to school, parents are engaged in their children's participation at school, and, another huge improvement we are seeing is drop-out rates are falling fast in our partner schools!

Ver los ojos de los niños brillar y las caras sonreír a lo grande mientras sus familias aplaudían y chiflaban fuertemente fue más que especial para nosotros. Hace solo unos años, cuando comenzamos a asociarnos con las escuelas, las aulas estaban casi vacías y los eventos eran pocos y esporádicos. Avancemos ocho años después, hasta ahora, ¡y estamos viendo aulas llenas de niños y la inscripción para el próximo año por las nubes! Los niños están interesados ​​en ir a la escuela, los padres están comprometidos con la participación de sus hijos en la escuela y, otra gran mejora que estamos viendo es que las tasas de abandono escolar están cayendo rápidamente en nuestras escuelas aliadas.

The top students of the class are invited to be the color guard. They must learn how to properly march in unison, carry and parade the flag before leading the pledge and singing the national anthem. | Los mejores estudiantes de la clase están invitados a ser parte de la escolta. Deben aprender a marchar correctamente y juntos, llevar la bandera antes de guiar el grupo en decir el juramento y cantar el himno nacional.

It is also culturally typical to perform a song and/or dance at graduation ceremonies. Here, the 6th graders from Chalpicote are performing. | También es culturalmente típico cantar una canción y/o realizar una coreografía en las ceremonias de graduación. Aquí, los alumnos de 6to grado de Chalpicote están bailando.

Graduations, along with birthday parties and weddings often have “padrinos”, or close friends and family members that help cover the cost, acting as “godparents” for the event. MARKED was the official “padrino” of the kinder graduation. In addition to their diploma, each child received a special personalized gift from our staff. | Las graduaciones, junto con las fiestas de cumpleaños y las bodas, a menudo tienen “padrinos”, o amigos cercanos y familiares que ayudan a cubrir el costo, actuando como “padrinos” del evento. MARKED fue el “padrino” oficial de la graduación de kinder. Además de su diploma, cada niño recibió un regalo especial personalizado de nuestro personal.

We were overjoyed to see Carlitos graduate along with his classmates. His life is a miracle. If you remember, we asked for your prayers after he was in an accident. He spent an entire month in a coma at the hospital but as you can see, he is healthy, happy and will soon begin elementary school! | Nos llenó de alegría ver a Carlitos graduarse junto con sus compañeros de clase. Su vida es un milagro. Si recuerdas, les pedimos sus oraciones después de que tuvo un accidente. Pasó un mes entero en coma en el hospital, pero como pueden ver, está sano, feliz y ¡pronto comenzará la escuela primaria!

Being invited into schools has gifted MARKED with relationships with more children, families, and leaders in the community. It has given us power of influence and a direct path to empower not just this generation but the ones to come. Each graduation is a sign to us that change is happening. Education is being valued, and lives are put on a new trajectory, towards hope, growth and prosperity.

Ser invitado a las escuelas ha dotado a MARKED de relaciones con más niños, familias y líderes en la comunidad. Nos ha dado poder de influencia y un camino directo para empoderar no solo a esta generación sino a las venideras. Cada graduación es una señal para nosotros de que se está produciendo un cambio. La educación se valora y las vidas se ponen en una nueva trayectoria, hacia la esperanza, el crecimiento y la prosperidad.

Though the school year just ended, the next one is around the corner! Thanks to the success of our feeding programs and school partnerships this year, we have the opportunity to do the same for 100 more children next year, starting at the end of August!

Aunque el ciclo escolar acaba de terminar, ¡el próximo está por empezar! Gracias al éxito de nuestros programas de alimentación y alianzas escolares este año, tenemos la oportunidad de hacer lo mismo con 100 niños más el próximo año, ¡a partir de finales de agosto!
